How to Clean Gold Jewellery

Gold jewellery is a valuable investment, but one that can easily become dull and scratched if not cleaned regularly. Many people avoid this simple task because they believe that gold cleaning is expensive and complicated, but in reality the process is quite easy. Using the right polish and tools will keep your precious gold pieces looking lustrous for years to come.

To clean your jewellery at home, you’ll need a few supplies: warm water, mild soap or dish detergent and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Mix a solution of warm water and a few drops of soap until the solution is soapy and foamy, then add your jewellery and allow it to soak for about 10-15 minutes. Scrub the items with a toothbrush to loosen any dirt or grime that is stuck on, then rinse each piece thoroughly in clean warm water until all the soapy residue has been washed away. After rinsing, dry each piece with a lint-free cloth to avoid leaving any watermarks on the surface.

Vinegar is another effective and safe way to clean gold jewellery. However, it’s important to note that frequent exposure to vinegar may dull your pieces. A good alternative is to use a mild liquid dish detergent mixed with warm water, and then gently scrub each piece with a soft bristled toothbrush. Rinse after scrubbing and then dry with a microfibre jewellery polishing cloth for an immaculate finish.

If you’re cleaning a gold-plated item (such as an earring or bracelet), be careful not to wear it in the bath, or wash it in water, because this can cause the underlying metal to tarnish and wear away faster than real gold. Instead, wipe down the piece using Town Talk’s Jewel Sparkle on a microfibre jewelry polishing cloth. This will remove dust, pollution and oils from the surface of your jewellery without causing any scratches or dulling.

For gold pieces that are particularly dirty, a solution made from warm water and a few drops of mild soap is the best option. Make sure to use a non-abrasive cleaner, such as baby shampoo, to prevent scratching the jewelry. Once the jewelry has soaked for about 10-15 minutes, scrub it with a soft bristled toothbrush and then rinse and dry each piece individually.

If your jewellery still looks dull or tarnished after a gentle cleaning, it’s probably time to bring it to the jeweler for a professional polish. A professional jeweler will have the proper tools and expertise to safely buff out any scratches and tarnish, and restore your jewelry’s beautiful luster. They’ll also be able to advise you on the type of gold your jewellery is and whether it requires any special care or handling. Solid gold will never tarnish, but gold-plated and vermeil jewellery can, so it’s best to take these items to a jeweler for regular polishing and cleaning. It’s worth the investment in the long run.
